Earl Durham, RIP

I don't know much about him, but I'm told that Earl Durham has passed away recently.  He was a civil rights advocate and friend of Al Raby.  He was also the chair of Designs For Change.  Does anyone know more, or have information about him that could be shared?

Question Of The Week: Halloween Love It Or Hate It?

HalloweenSome of you love Halloween for all its creativity and tradition, while others of you loath it for the disruptions and interruptions it brings to classrooms and learning. (My favorite part of it is that it comes at just the same time as the state test scores are officially released -- talk about "trick or treat.")  Which side are you on, and why?  Tell us what happens at your school, or home, or block -- currently or in the past -- and what's happening this year. Costumes?  Candy?  Parades?

My Enemy's Friend Is My Enemy, Too

Let the charter-hating begin.  CICS celebrated 10 years this weekend, and WGN and the Tribune -- those ignorant fools -- they covered it (Charter school grows with focus on health).  The funny thing is that, listening to the parents talk about why they chose a charter school, it's hard to put that down.  They want better for their kids.  They think and hope that they're getting it. Teachers get to choose where they work, by and large.  And many choose non-neighborhood schools for their own children.  What's the problem with charters again?  Oh, right.  If those guys are for it, then I'm against it.

Unions & Charters -- Event Recap

Mvphoto1There's been some interesting responses to the August 15 talk about teachers, charter schools, and unions -- a relatively new idea for Chicago.  I'm still hoping for more.  But if you weren't there you can listen to part of it at AlderTrack (here), and more to come.  So far as I've listened, Klonsky (pictured) is introducing the idea that charters actually come from unions -- Al Shanker, specifically -- and were opposed by conservatives.  He also describes how small schools, like charters, may have been co-opted but aren't necessarily bad ideas.  Check it out.
